If you're scaling a cake, bread, or pastry, the ratios between flour, liquid, and leavening matter a lot — measure carefully and, ideally, weigh your ingredients. If you're scaling a stew, soup, or sauce, the proportions are forgiving and rounding to the nearest common fraction (which the calculator does) is perfectly fine.
Eggs Are Awkward at Odd Scales
Scaling a 2-egg recipe by 1.5 gives 3 eggs — clean. But a 3-egg recipe scaled by 0.5 gives 1.5 eggs. For baking, beat the egg and measure out half of it by volume (a large egg is about 3 tablespoons, so 1 1/2 tablespoons is half). For cooking, just use the nearest whole egg; the difference rarely matters.
