The Coffee-to-Water Ratio, Explained
A coffee-to-water ratio is the relationship between the weight of the coffee and the weight of the water used to brew it, written as "coffee : water." A 1:15 ratio means 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water. Because 1 milliliter of water weighs exactly 1 gram, water can be measured in milliliters and treated as grams — which is why the ratio works identically whether you think in "grams of coffee per 500 ml of water" or "grams of coffee per 500 g of water." Ratios are deliberately weight-based rather than volume-based because ground coffee has no fixed density: a scoop that holds 7 g of one roast might hold 5 g of another. Weight is the only measure that survives a change of beans, grinder, or brand.
Every calculation in this tool reduces to one of two formulas. When you know the water volume, divide it by the ratio's second number to get the coffee: grams of coffee = water in ml ÷ (water parts per coffee part). When you know the coffee weight, multiply it by the ratio: water in ml = grams of coffee × (water parts per coffee part). The "cups" mode simply converts cups to milliliters first — one cup being 240 ml — and then applies the same division.

Step-by-Step Worked Example
Say you want four cups of pour-over coffee using the calculator's default 1:15 ratio. Here is the exact arithmetic behind the result you see on screen.
- Convert the cups to water volume. One cup is 240 ml, so 4 cups × 240 ml = 960 ml of water.
- Divide by the ratio's water side. At 1:15 there are 15 ml of water per 1 g of coffee, so 960 ÷ 15 = 64 g of coffee.
- Read the answer. You need 64 g of coffee (about 2.26 oz) for 960 ml of water (about 32.5 fl oz, exactly 4 cups). The calculator labels the ratio "balanced," which is where 1:15 sits on the strength scale.
Now flip the problem around with the calculator's "coffee weight" mode: you have 30 g of beans and want to know how much water they will brew. 30 g × 15 = 450 ml of water — about 1.9 cups. The two directions are exact inverses of each other, which is what makes a single ratio so convenient: learn one number and it answers every "how much" question about that brew style.
The Strength Scale
The calculator describes any ratio as strong, balanced, or light based purely on where it falls on the conventional brewing scale. Below 13 parts water per part coffee the brew reads as bold and concentrated — espresso, moka, and cold-brew concentrate all live here. From 13 to 17 parts water it sits in the balanced band that most hot-brewing methods target. Above 17 parts water the cup becomes noticeably lighter and more delicate, which some drinkers prefer for very lightly roasted beans. The label is a description, not a recommendation: plenty of excellent coffee is brewed outside the "balanced" band on purpose.

Why Weight Beats Scoops and Cups
The single biggest reason brews taste different from day to day is measuring coffee by volume. The density of ground coffee changes with the roast level, the origin, the grind setting, and how the bag was packed — the same scoop can hold 20% more or less coffee depending on those factors. A kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g costs less than a bag of specialty beans and removes the variable entirely. When you weigh the coffee and weigh (or measure by milliliter) the water, a 1:15 ratio yields the same strength extraction today, next week, and with a different bag of beans. That is the whole reason ratios are published in weight: it is the only unit that means the same thing to everyone.
It is also worth knowing that "cups" is an inconsistent unit in the wild. Recipe writers use it for 8 fl oz (237 ml), the legal 240 ml cup, or a coffee-maker's own marked line, which is often closer to 150 ml. This calculator standardizes on the 240 ml cup and says so plainly, so the numbers you get are reproducible — if your brewer's markings differ, use the "water volume" mode instead and enter what you actually pour.
Common Mistakes & Troubleshooting
Swapping the Two Sides of the Ratio
A ratio is written coffee first, water second, so 1:15 means 1 g coffee per 15 g water — not the other way around. Reading it backwards gives you a 15:1 concentrate that is roughly espresso strength. If a result looks absurdly large or small, check that the coffee number is the smaller one for hot brewing.
Mixing Weight and Volume Units
Fluid ounces and weight ounces are different things: 16 fl oz of water weighs about 16.6 oz, not 16 oz. Similarly, a recipe that says "2 oz of coffee" almost always means weight, while "2 oz of water" usually means volume. The calculator's unit toggles convert between them (28.35 g per oz, and 29.57 ml per fl oz), so pick the unit you actually have and let it convert.
Forgetting Brew Retention
Grounds absorb roughly twice their weight in water. A pour-over brewed with 64 g of coffee and 960 ml of water yields about 830 ml of finished coffee, not a full liter. If your carafe is coming up short of the marked line, this retention — not a leaky scale — is almost always the cause. Target a slightly larger water volume when you need a full pot out.
Treating the Ratio as a Fixed Law
Published ratios are starting points tuned to a middle-of-the-road roast and grind. A dark, oily roast can taste better a step lighter (1:16 or 1:17), while a delicate light roast often needs a denser 1:13 or 1:14 to register at all. Change one variable at a time and keep notes — the ratio is a dial, not a commandment.
